Words like “probiotic,” “prebiotic” and “microbiome” have been showing up in a lot more scientific literature — and hence more mainstream news coverage — in the last few years.

In some cases these can be more than a nuisance -- they can lay one open to an overpopulation of some other, very troubling, microscopic residents.
