For longer-term sleep problems, try keeping a diary (during the day...you'll just wreck your sleep even worse if you do it in the night!) recording details of how often you woke, at what times and how long you were awake, along with the variables of your day that could have an effect (stress, alcohol consumption, medications taken, any naps, time you went to bed, etc.). Then, use it to work with your doctor on possible causes and solutions.
